Recognising it

What counts as an eye emergency

If any of these describes what is happening right now, it needs to be seen within hours — not at the next convenient appointment.

Sudden vision loss

Vision going dark, grey or blank in one eye or both, whether or not it comes back. Painless sudden loss is often vascular — a blocked artery or vein — and the treatment window is measured in hours.

Severe eye pain

Deep, boring pain, particularly with redness, coloured haloes around lights, headache, nausea or vomiting. This pattern suggests acute angle-closure glaucoma, where the pressure must be brought down the same day to save the nerve.

Injury to the eye

A blow from a ball, a cricket injury, a road accident, or anything sharp — metal, glass, wire, a thorn. Even if vision seems fine, a penetrating injury can look deceptively minor from outside.

Chemical exposure

Lime, cement, acid, alkali, cleaning fluids, pesticide, petrol, battery acid. Alkalis such as lime and cement are the most damaging and keep burning long after contact. Rinse first, travel second.

Foreign body in the eye

Grit, metal shavings, glass or wood, especially after grinding, drilling, welding or hammering metal. High-speed particles can enter the eye with almost no pain and no visible wound.

Red eye with a change in vision

A red eye alone is usually minor. A red eye together with blurred vision, light sensitivity or pain is not — it can mean uveitis, a corneal ulcer or raised pressure.

Flashes and floaters

A sudden shower of new floaters, repeated flashes of light like lightning at the edge of vision, or a shadow creeping in from the side. These are the classic warnings of a retinal tear or detachment, and hours matter.

Sudden swelling or a bulging eye

Rapid swelling of the lids with fever, or an eye that begins to protrude, can mean orbital cellulitis or bleeding behind the eye. Both are urgent.

Bleeding in or around the eye

Blood visible inside the front of the eye after trauma, or bleeding from a lid laceration, needs assessment the same day — including for damage the bleeding is hiding.

First aid

What to do, and what never to do

Most permanent damage from eye emergencies happens in the minutes before arrival — usually from rubbing, from home remedies, or from trying to remove something.

SituationDo thisNever do this
Chemical splashRinse immediately with clean running water or saline for at least 15 minutes, holding the lids open. Keep rinsing in the vehicle on the way. Bring the container or the name of the chemical.Do not stop to look for an eye wash or neutralising solution. Do not use milk, oil or any home remedy. Do not delay the rinse to travel faster.
Something in the eyeBlink several times, then rinse gently with clean water. If it does not come out, cover the eye loosely and come in.Never rub the eye. Never try to remove anything embedded with a cloth, cotton bud, tweezers or your fingers.
Blunt injury (ball, fist, fall)Apply a cold pack to the area around the eye, not pressing on the eye itself, and come in for an examination even if vision seems normal.Do not press on the eyeball. Do not assume it is fine because you can still see — retinal damage and bleeding are often painless at first.
Sharp or penetrating injuryCover the eye with a rigid shield or a clean paper cup taped over it, and come immediately. Keep the head elevated.Never remove a protruding object. Never apply pressure, ointment or drops. Do not eat or drink, in case surgery is needed.
Sudden vision loss, flashes or floatersCome in the same day. Note the exact time it started — it genuinely affects treatment decisions.Do not wait to see whether it settles overnight. Do not drive yourself.
Severe pain with haloes and vomitingCome in immediately. Bring a list of your regular medicines.Do not take unprescribed eye drops. Do not lie in a darkened room hoping it passes — pressure damage accumulates by the hour.
Any of the aboveBring your glasses, previous eye reports and your medicine list. Have someone else drive.Do not apply ointments, kajal, breast milk, honey or herbal preparations. Do not use anaesthetic drops repeatedly — they mask damage and delay healing.

These are first-aid measures for the journey to hospital. None of them is a substitute for being examined.

FAQs

Emergency questions, answered

Which MediVision centre handles emergencies at night?

Masab Tank in Hyderabad. It is the only centre with a 24×7 eye emergency desk. Call +91 40-4245 6666 at any hour and come directly — you do not need an appointment.

What do I do first after a chemical splash in the eye?

Rinse. Immediately, with clean running water or saline, holding the eyelids open, for at least 15 minutes — and keep rinsing on the way to hospital. Do not spend time searching for a special eye wash, and do not use milk, oil or any home remedy. Bring the chemical container or its name if you safely can. Alkalis such as lime and cement are the most damaging and continue burning long after contact.

Something is stuck in my eye. Can I take it out?

Blink a few times and rinse gently with clean water. If that does not free it, stop — do not rub, and do not use tweezers, cotton buds, cloth or your fingers, especially if the object appears embedded. Cover the eye loosely and come in.

My vision went dark for a few minutes and then came back. Is that still an emergency?

Yes. Temporary loss of vision that recovers can signal a blocked vessel or a warning of stroke, and it needs to be assessed the same day even though you can see now. Note exactly how long it lasted.

I was hit in the eye but I can see fine. Do I need to come in?

Yes. Retinal tears, bleeding inside the eye and angle damage are frequently painless at first and can be missed entirely without a dilated examination. Come in the same day.

I suddenly have a lot of new floaters. How urgent is it?

Urgent. A sudden shower of floaters, flashes of light or a shadow moving across your field of vision are the classic signs of a retinal tear or detachment. Seen within hours, a tear is often sealed with laser in the clinic. Left for days, it may need major surgery and the vision may not fully recover.

Can I go to your Warangal or Nalgonda centre in an emergency?

During their opening hours, yes — they will assess and stabilise you and arrange transfer to Masab Tank if that is where the treatment belongs. Outside those hours, or for anything severe, go directly to Masab Tank.
